Golden Circle Apartments, Laugarvatn, Iceland
are modern, clean and spacious. They are in an ideal location right next door to the Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths, and within easy driving distance of many of the wonderful sights that can be seen in the Golden Circle region of Iceland.
We stayed in a Superior Studio – which, on arrival, actually turned out to be very nice one-bedroom apartment.
Check-in was seamless – we were emailed a key code two days before arrival, and were able to park right alongside the apartment building (parking is free). We turned up a little earlier than the check-in time, so were expecting to have to wait for our apartment to be ready – but in fact we were able to check in as soon as we arrived, giving us more time to explore this beautiful area.
On entering our apartment, we were immediately struck by how spacious it was (especially as we had been expecting a studio).
The living and dining area was huge, with bunk beds for the kids tucked away in one corner, and a cute little balcony with glorious panoramic lake and mountain views. There was also a flat-screen TV.
There was a big comfortable sofa and a dining table – and the whole room was smart and spotlessly clean.
The kitchen was well-equipped and had everything we needed to prepare simple meals: a proper oven, hob, large fridge freezer, microwave, coffee maker, and plenty of mugs, plates and cutlery. There's a small supermarket a short walk away, for stocking up on provisions.
The separate twin bedroom was also a very pleasant room: light and bright, with three different windows for stargazing or Northern Lights spotting, without having to get out of bed!
The decent-sized shower room was also spotless.
While staying at Golden Circle apartments, a visit to is a must. It's just a two-minute walk away – you can see it from the apartment.
At Laugarvatn Fontana, there are a selection of different pools – all different sizes and temperatures, and all heated using geothermal energy.
We spent a very relaxing couple of hours here – alternating gentle swimming in the cooler pools with lounging and wallowing in the hotter ones. Our favourite pool was like a large, natural rock pool – next to the lake, it had wonderful views.
At Laugarvatn Fontana there are also three steam rooms and a sauna with huge windows for more excellent lake views.
Further afield, the main sights – for example Geysir, Gullfoss and Þingvellir (pictured below) – are all within easy driving distance, making this an excellent place to base yourself if you want to enjoy the region at a leisurely pace.
Given the often eye-watering prices of accommodation in Iceland, Golden Circle Apartments offers excellent value for money – especially if travelling as a family.
With the added advantage of being able to shop at the local supermarket for self-catering meals – so saving money on restaurant meals too – this is a very affordable option in a country that is renowned for being expensive. Highly recommended!
