Beitostølen in Norway's Oppland region is a small, quiet family-friendly ski resort, with gentle rolling slopes that are perfect for downhill beginners or cross-country skiers. It's a great place for a winter adventure, with non-skiers well catered for in terms of activities including sledging, snowshoe hiking and husky sledding.
Beitostølen is also a good base for summer mountain activities. As well as husky carting and canoeing, there are some excellent hiking opportunities, with the starting point for the Besseggen Ridge walk – one of Norway's most celebrated hikes – a short drive away.
Beitostølen Gjestegaarden offers modern, self-catering apartments sleeping up to seven people. It's located right in the centre of the village, and so is within walking distance of bars, shops, restaurants and all activities – with chairlifts directly opposite, giving access to skiing and hiking trails. There is free on-site parking at Gjestegaarden, and just across the road is a large, well-stocked supermarket – with everything you need for a self-catering holiday.
On arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Nina, who has excellent knowledge of the surrounding area and available activities, and happily answered all our questions.
Our two-storey, two-bedroom apartment at Gjestegaarden was spacious, clean and pleasantly furnished. There was an open space living and dining room with well-equipped kitchen area, large balcony and comfortable sofas to relax in.
The large double bedroom and bathroom were accessed from the living area, with plenty of storage space in the bedroom. A flight of open-tread stairs led up to the second bedroom. This was another very spacious room with four single beds and mountain views.
Overall, we found Beitostølen Gjestegaarden to be a welcoming, well-managed and extremely convenient place to stay in a beautiful area of Norway.
