The Merrell Kahuna III is an excellent and versatile men’s sandal that I’ve enjoyed testing in a range of conditions over several months – from rocky tracks in the Mediterranean to city walking for several hours during hot summer days to wet conditions, including on canoeing and kayaking expeditions.

Throughout, I’ve found the Kahuna III to be extremely comfortable – nicely contoured and padded with a lining of Lycra neoprene. This comfort was immediate straight out of the box – there were no problems with rubbing during initial wear.

The sandal is durable, looks good and has a hook and loop closure system, to provide quick adjustability. At only 340g, these sandals are lightweight – so much so that I have tended to forget that I’m wearing them – and they pack easily into suitcase or backpack without adding unnecessary weight to your luggage. The sandal also has an antimicrobial treatment to reduce odours – essential in hot conditions.

The air cushion in the heel – designed to absorb shock and add stability – works well. I have been very impressed by the grip and traction offered by the rubber soles in trail conditions – although occasionally on smooth, paved slopes in wet urban conditions I did feel the need to take care as I walked.
