At least 14 million tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean every year – and a large proportion of this is single-use plastic bottles.

The impact of plastic pollution on marine wildlife is huge. Marine animals swallow plastic debris, and can suffocate or become entangled in it, causing injury or death. More than a million seabirds, and some 100,000 marine animals die each year because of plastic waste in our seas and oceans.

While some plastic pollution comes from ocean-based activities such as fishing, the main source comes from the land. Debris and litter finds its way to the sea along waterways, and plastic waste is discarded on beaches.

One of the most shocking results of this is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, between Hawaii and California. This is the largest accumulation of ocean plastic in the world, and covers an area of around 1.6 million square kilometres. It's estimated that by the year 2050, there will be more plastic than fishes in the sea.

In order to tackle this problem and prevent it getting worse, we all need to reduce or eliminate our consumption of single-use plastics – and plastic water bottles are an excellent place to start.

In the UK, around 10 million bottles of water are sold every day – and most of these won't be recycled.

Switching to a reusable water bottle is easy – and could also save you a lot of money. When it comes to reusable bottles there's a lot to choose from. For a more sustainable option, choose a high-quality plastic-free bottle that's durable.

Ocean Bottle is one of the most ethical reusable water bottles you can buy – it's made from recycled stainless steel, and is designed to last a lifetime. It has vacuum insulation to keep drinks hot or cold, and innovative interchangeable lids – so you can choose between a sports-style flip lid with removable straw*, or a standard lid.

You can also add a Brew Lid* – this seamlessly converts your water bottle into a leak-proof, easy-to-drink-from coffee flask.

But what's most remarkable about Ocean Bottle is that every bottle purchased pays for 1000 ocean-bound bottles (or equivalent weight of other plastics) to be collected before they reach the ocean. So, in buying an Ocean Bottle, you're not just preventing your own single-use plastic from polluting the seas – you're also helping to prevent other waste from harming marine environments.

The money spent on each bottle is paid to local collectors in coastal communities such as Brazil, Ghana, India and Indonesia. More than 370 communities are now benefitting from this waste management programme, allowing people to earn money to access healthcare, education and other services.

A staggering 12 million kilos of ocean-bound plastic has already been collected and kept out of the sea. And by 2025 Ocean Bottle aim to have collected 7 billion plastic bottles.

Ocean Bottle is available in 500ml or 1l sizes, and a range of attractive colours. It looks great too – we love the sleek design. And the 10-year warranty means you can be confident your bottle will last for a very long time.
